Perspectiva chilena

Antes de comenzar SIOSEARCH:

Breve introducción, el terremoto desde nuestra perspectiva en el barco,

Nos encontramos a bordo del RV Melville desde el 24 de febrero.

Fuimos parte del  INSPIRE CRUISE y ahora participamos en el SIOSEARCH. Desde el mar, comenzamos nuestro blog.

El sábado 27 de febrero a las 4 am, nos encontrábamos en la cubierta del barco, a la espera del multicore (instrumento para obtener sedimentos desde el fondo del mar), cuando supimos la noticia del terremoto en Chile, de magnitud 8,8 en la escala de Richter.

A pesar de que teníamos a bordo una buena conexión a internet, no tuvimos acceso a ninguna página web chilena, nuestra fuente de información sólo la obtuvimos desde páginas extranjeras (USGS, GFZ, etc). Durante muchas horas y en algunos casos, días, los chilenos no tuvimos información de nuestras familias. Afortunadamente, de apoco comenzamos a respirar tranquilos al tener noticias de nuestras familias y amigos. Agradecemos al jefe científico Andrew Thurber, al capitán del barco Wes Hill, la tripulación y toda la gente de Scripps, quienes fueron muy amables y mostraron preocupación por nuestras familias y nuestro ánimo abordo.

Con el pasar de las horas y los días nos fuimos enterando de la real magnitud del suceso, atentos a las noticias, fotos, revisando continuamente los registros de sismicidad del USGS y pormenores de todo tipo. Los chilenos abordo (autodenominados “the chilean people”) nos sentíamos en una burbuja, sin poder asimilar lo que estaba sucediendo en nuestro Chilito. En nuestro caso, aún lo estamos.

En medio de las terribles noticias, resultaba difícil concentrarse en las tareas del crucero, nos sentíamos tan alejados de la realidad..  a ratos divagamos con la idea de entretener al capitán en el puente y fugarnos con la nave de vuelta a Tierra, el estilo de “Madagascar”.. pero tal como los pingüinos de la película, ninguno hubiera podido dirigir la nave.. habríamos llegado quien sabe dónde, por lo tanto desistimos.

El crucero INSPIRE finalizó el 17 de marzo, nosotras acompañamos y despedimos a nuestros compañeros y amigos del primer crucero a puerto y luego tres de nosotros continuamos a bordo, esta vez con el propósito de participar, junto al nuevo grupo de científicos, en el estudio de la zona de ruptura del terremoto del 27febrero 2010.
